The term app is used very commonly these days because of the rise in the sheer number of smart phones that support the use of these “applications”. There are apps for everything these days, starting from games for your cell phones to cook books. So, it is not surprising to see that Apple is taking full advantage of their app market, called the App Store. You could say that in a way, Apple were the first ones to fully utilize the convention of these apps. They saw the potential that these would-be gems would provide for the cell phone industry in terms of adding extra content and value and capitalized on it. To be honest, I think it is a brilliant ploy by Apple to venture into the app market and try and make it their own. Anyone that makes any sort of app for Apple products, such as iPhones and iPods, the only way of getting them to the public is through Apple’s App Store. They mediate what material makes it to the market place and what sort of apps is available for download. This provides the factor of quality over quantity, in a sense that the apps must be good enough to make it to the store. If this wasn’t mediated by Apple, then there would be an influx of useless and badly made apps, made by any user, regardless of their skill. Even though Apple’s policy over their App Store is rigid and can be viewed as a monopoly in the app market for their products, in my view it actually helps them monitor the app market and provide the best in app service to their consumers.
